I probably should start with the name of the site, shouldn't I? It's not literally true, of course, I've played many other JRPGs and enjoyed...okay not that many of them, honestly. But I mean I liked Undertale! And the first half of Mother 3! So there we go. Anyway, this game does some rather unique stuff that, although some of it appears elsewhere, I have never seen in combination like this:
- Monster collecting (i.e. a wide variety of party options)
- Three on three combat, with different zones/"columns" to keep track of
- A truly turn-based system, not the overwrought, boring nonsense that is ATB
- Turns taken individually, so you can adjust your plans on the fly
- The ability to see enemies' stats, moves, and most importantly HP
- Visual indication of move effectiveness and resistance
- What I call an MP Goes Up system for attacks
- Full healing after every fight, and no healing items to spam
- Saving anywhere
- A journal that always tells you what to do next
- No unavoidable random encounters (not that this game doesn't have its own frustrating randomness)
By no means does Fossil Fighers have no flaws, but it does a lot of cool things I really wish other games picked up on.
